The Hope Credit was an important tax credit for many taxpayers who were trying to offset the cost of college tuition. However, the American Opportunity Tax Credit is a much more generous credit that is available to a wider range of taxpayers. The Hope Credit ended in 2008, and the AOTC has been available since 2009.
